SÈRGIO MAH
Learning Goals
The subject main purpose is to provide a reflective field around the characteristics and the functional, aesthetic and conceptual connections between photography and architecture. The program aims the identification and analysis of the conditions, themes and significant questions, as well as the tendencies and visual genres that contributed for distinguishing a peculiar territory for architectural photography. It is intended that the student deepen his comprehension and critical sense around a fundamental strand for the practice and study of architecture.
Syllabus
Based on the Photography and architecture history, during the classes authors and example works will be presented and discussed around the “dual regime” photography and architecture theme: in one hand, photography as a tool and a representation and communication mean for architecture; and on the other hand, architecture as a privilege theme for the modern and contemporary photography, especially for artistic photography. Documentation and objectivity, historical attention and phenomenological attention, factuality and fictionality, figuration and abstraction, imagery and physicality, are some of the analysis topics.
Teaching Methodology
The classes first part will consist on theoretic sessions exposing, relating and analyzing the several themes that fulfill the subject syllabus. The second part will be dedicated to discussion and individual assignments orientation, in which students may choose between a theoretical or theoretical-practical strand. Assignments should be developed around the classes' themes.
There will be a continuous evaluation and a classification in a scale from 0 to 20 as a final result. Evaluation criteria: assiduity, discussion participation and analysis ability; individual assignment process, methodology and quality.
